Who are we … and from where have we come?
We are pleased and proud to introduce Karinda Charolais, established in 1992, and occupying a little piece of paradise near Kumbia in the South Burnett of Queensland.
Our enthusiasm for Charolais cattle was first aroused in the early 80s through our association with Sanmarlyn Charolais Stud in Central Queensland. Over time we have put together a very solid breeding herd founded on the attributes we found so impressive – temperament, growth for age and maternal characteristics.
Our foundation polled female was 2UP Strawberry Tart, a daughter of the great matron 2UP Jam Tart, multiple Royal broad ribbon winner and legend in the Charolais breed. Our Strawberry Tart, who won many local interbreed and supreme awards including Supreme Female and Interbreed Champion at Toowoomba Royal, has been the source of many of our top breeders and sale bulls.
The French side of our herd was initiated using AI Sires who were trait leaders for low birth weight and high milk. Our current program aims to enhance the legacy of these early sires and add softness, growth for age and consistency in the bulls we offer our clients.
The sires we use are chosen carefully to move our herd forward, and there is little place for fads of the moment types.Typical of the sires currently in use at Karinda are:
POLLED – EC No Doubt, LT Bluegrass, LT Rio Bravo, LT Easy Blend, Gridmaker, CS Polled Junction, LT Long Distance, VPI Free Lunch, BCR Polled Unlimited.
FRENCH – Pinay, Virgil, Gauguin
A purposeful selection and culling process exists at Karinda with emphasis on structural correctness, placid temperament, fertility and growth.
The next few years will see a concentration on the polled side of our breeding programme as we believe there will be an increased demand for polled genetics by the commercial cattleman.
We have experienced success in our small crossbreeding program, in the show ring, carcasses competitions and saleyards, crossing Charolais with Charbray, Hereford and Shorthorn.
Our attendance at World Charolais Conferences in North and South America, Britain and Europe has given us the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of developments and trends in the Charolais breed across the world, to inspect on-the-ground progeny of potential sires, and to determine suitability or otherwise of sires for the Australian markets.
We are at 141 Kumbia Back Road, just off the Bunya Highway between Kingaroy and Kumbia, approximately 20 km from Kingaroy, Q, in the heart of the South Burnett Wine trail.
